Making an Autonomous Panel

An autonomous panel is a stained glass free-hanging panel that is independent of the surrounding architecture and is a moveable work of art with a spirit of its own.

This panel, titled Deep Reflections, was on the drawing board for several months before the final designs were completed.  This panel is one of three that are variations of a common theme.

The inspiration for this piece comes from the visualization of deep, peaceful thoughts and the way those thoughts flow and change.  If we allow our thoughts to seek their own wisdom, beautiful pathways to discovery emerge.

The panel is constructed with carefully chosen Blenko hand blown glass.  The beveled “glints” were made by glass beveler Dennis Swan.

Cut glass to fit the pattern of an autonomous panel    Glass is all cut to fit the pattern with a heart width gap for the lead.

Leading a stained glass panel   Leading continues with pieces secured by horseshoe nails.

Leading a stained glass panel  Almost finished with lead work.

The lead cames will be soldered at the joints on both sides.

Cementing a stained glass panel   VERY messy and stinky!  Home brewed putty is pushed into the cames,

cleaned and   left to dry.

Once the cement is dry enough, the panel  is painstakingly cleaned.  Then it is fitted into a wooden frame.

Oak is routed, mitered, drilled, screws inserted and covered with an oak plug.

An oil finish is then applied.

A peek in the south and west studio windows before the final polishing.

                                                  Nice reflections.
