About the Artist                Stained glass panel

I hate to write about myself, not really knowing what is of interest to others.  So...here goes...

Art has been a life-long passion and  has ranged from drawing and painting to pottery, sculpture, fabric art, woodworking and glass.  It's all about what I can get my hands on, including garden design and house construction!

My formal training in the visual arts includes a BA in Studio Art from the University of Maryland.  I have studied under fine artists and have derived much inspiration from them as well as the work of artists across time.  I am forever humbled by the incredible work of others!  I have also had the pleasure of teaching and sharing the expression of art with my students.

In 1979, my first art studio was located in Lewisburg, West Virginia, a wonderful fine arts and crafts town.  There, I taught drawing and painting and began my first forays into stained glass.  I later took a break in my glass work and seriously resumed that stained glass art again in 1999.

Inspiration has come from my own cultural backgrounds, which have moved me towards Japanese and Celtic art forms.  Inspiration also comes from nature, a walk on a beautiful day and the images that interrupt my sleep.

My new designs have evolved in directions that are quite exciting.  New work is always in progress.  Presently, I am focusing on abstract panels and designing and building lamps.  Traditional Japanese andon lantern forms are capturing my imagination.   The beautiful forms of nature such as flowers, butterfly wings and the tiny droplets of red berries in winter snow appear in my designs.  Combining the traditional Japanese andons with contemporary stained glass design allows me to create a whole new lighting concept:  Simplicity and peacefulness in a modern utilitarian object.

The abstract panels also convey this idea of simplicity but contain energy of color and movement that can bring a mood of excitement into a space without being too busy or overwhelming.  Twisting and broken forms, complementing colors and sometimes surprising lightning bolts can illuminate a landscape of emotion and beauty. I like these hangings because they are mobile and energetic, like our society.
